Juegos Parapanamericanos

“Presunto Culpable” – “Presumed Guilty”

Great news for Mexican cinema – and justice!

On Monday night’s News & Documentary Emmy ceremony in New York, Roberto Hernández, co-director and co-producer of this Mexican documentary, won the Emmy 2011 for outstanding investigative journalism — along with his wife and fellow UC Berkeley grad student, Layda Negrete.

This film is the story of a street vendor accused of murdering a woman he never even met. He was sentenced to 20 years in jail, twice, despite the all the proof of his innocence. Six years ago, Roberto and Layda began shooting video footage inside Mexico’s courtrooms and detention centers in connection with this criminal case.

When receiving his Emmy, Hernández noted that while Mexico has a long way to go to improve its justice system, unlike the U.S. it has no death penalty. “That’s why we were able to save Toño,” he said.

Hernández attributes the film’s international accolades to the fact that “it’s affected the hearts of people. They can imagine themselves in Antonio’s shoes, where only a camera can save your life.”

“Presumed Guilty” was nominated for three Emmys — Outstanding investigative journalism (long form), Best documentary and Best research — and has received some 20 festival awards, in many countries.

A mí me gusta Vallarta y a ti?

Published by under History,Prudential Vallarta

Gael García Bernal, currently one of the most famous Mexican actors, received the Human Rights Award 2011, in the United States, for “giving a voice” to Mexican immigrants crossing into the US, in his documentary The Invisible. This award is given by WOLA, the Office in Washington for Latin American Affairs. Gael and WOLA are presenting the mentioned documentary at the US Congress.

Gael has just accepted Amnesty International´s invitation to make 4 documentaries, interviewing Latin American immigrants crossing Mexico on their way to the US. “This is the beginning of a new way of talking about immigration”, Gael said. “The strength, hope and fraternity I saw amongst the interviewed migrants I had not seen in any other situation”.

Mexican Independence Day

I think most of the foreigners living in Mexico´s know that we celebrate our Independence Day on September 15th, but I bet many do not know how it started.

So here is some information for you:

In the 1500s, Mexico was invaded by Spanish conquistadores, led by Hernán Cortés, and was a part of Spain’s empire for 300 years. In 1810, tired of the privileges of the Spaniards in the Church and the government, Priest Miguel Hidalgo started a revolt against the colonial authorities. Around 6:00 am on September 16th, 1810 he declared independence from the Spanish crown, and war against the government in what is known as El Grito de Dolores. The armed conflict known as the Mexican War of Independence started then and went on for eleven years. Spain was finally defeated in 1821.

Father Hidalgo and Father José María Morelos y Pavón were the main leaders in this War, both captured and executed fighting for our country´s freedom.

Other Insurgent heroes were Miguel Domínguez and his wife Josefa Ortiz, Ignacio Allende, Mariano Abasolo, Vicente Guerrero, Mariano Matamoros, Juan Aldama, Xavier Mina, Leona Vicario and her husband Andrés Quintana Roo, Nicolás Bravo and Guadalupe Victoria, who became the first President of Mexico in 1824.

¡¡Viva México!!

How To Choose A Retirement Community

Typically, retirement communities are classed one of two ways – either ‘age targeted’, or ‘age restricted’. Age restricted retirement communities do not allow anyone younger than 55 to find a home and might make extremely strict rules about long household of certain ages may visit. An age-targeted retirement community will never restrict when buying your home from a curious buyer younger than 55, the amenities and demographics might be vastly relevant to retirees.

Golfing in PV

Published by under Prudential Vallarta,Tourist

When you think of golf in Mexico think of Puerto Vallarta and Bahia de Banderas as ¨WildLife Golfing¨

Golfing in Puerto Vallarta varies from desert  to lush jungle settings. You can play and see the humpback whales in our magnificent bay playing the 9th hole on the Nicklaus Bahia Course or you can listen as gray tail hawks fly above their nests as you tee off on the 11th par 3 on the Norman course in Litibu.

Feeling more daring…. how about being the first tee time and getting to the 14th hole on the Weiskopf course at the Vista Vallarta Golf Course and in the coldest of our winters, 65° F see the paw prints of the mountain lions or the jaguars that were sleeping in the left hand bunkers by the 150 yard marker!

Now if you are really feeling lucky today, you might decide to try and stay on the fairways in our tightest course; Marina Vallarta where some are as tight as 20 yards wide and you have 9 holes that have trouble of the water kind. And in those water hazards we have our very dear and special salt water crocks that have been seen to grow up to 15 feet.

We now boast 9 fully functioning and operating golf courses with some of the most amazing wild life.

We also have condos and homes ranging from as low as $99K to $7.9 Million USD. So just let me know what is your handicap?
